About Action Ministries
Action Ministries, Inc. mobilizes communities to address the challenges of poverty by focusing on hunger relief, housing and education. We envision communities in which the cycle of poverty is broken and everyone has the tools needed to reach their full potential.
Action Ministries provides an extensive network of community partners and volunteers with the tools and expertise to lead fellow Georgians out of poverty. By meeting basic needs of hunger relief, housing and education, Action Ministries removes barriers that prevent thousands of Georgians from breaking the cycle of poverty and realizing their potential.
Founded in 1963, Action Ministries is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered as a charitable organization in the state of Georgia. Our volunteers come from varied backgrounds, including congregations, businesses and community organizations. This support helps make it possible for those in need to thrive in their newly transformed lives.
Women’s Community Kitchen Overview
The Women’s Community Kitchen is located at 458 Ponce de Leon Ave NE Atlanta, GA 30308, on the campus of Grace United Methodist Church and the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Our space and parking lots are under construction through the end of 2017. Please park in any of the available parking lots on Charles Allen Blvd, or on the street. Street parking is free. Entrance to the kitchen is through the right set of glass doors on the brick building. Please sign in with the WCK security officer.
A Typical Day
Upon arrival, your group will be welcomed by the Community Kitchen Manager. Set up will begin at this time. Meals can be reheated, tables set, drinks poured and condiments placed to ensure a smooth serving experience. At 11 am, women and children will begin arriving for lunch. As volunteers, you will assist clients in getting high chairs, and will serve drinks and lunches restaurant style. After lunch, volunteers assist with clean-up, including wiping down tables, sweeping floors and taking out the trash. The volunteer experience will conclude at approximately 12:45.
A Few Volunteer Guidelines
- Volunteers must follow kitchen protocols: wash hands, wear gloves and always wear closed toed shoes.
- No smoking.
- Don’t provide your contact information to the clients. If you have a job/housing lead for a client or would like to get more involved at Action Ministries Atlanta, please leave your contact information with staff.
- Don’t give a client any money. If you would like to make a donation to further the mission of Action Ministries Atlanta, you are more than welcome to leave it with the Kitchen Coordinator.
