Hands On Atlanta/Atlanta Community Food Bank COVID-19 Food Packing Vol

Description: COVID-19 Food Packing Volunteers will support ensuring Atlanta students and families get access to nutritious food while school has moved to “e-learning.” Additionally, many worker’s hours have been reduced, making it harder for families to put food on the table. For the foreseeable future, Hands On Atlanta, in partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, will be operating 5 food distribution sites in the Atlanta Public School (APS) district. Volunteers will unload pallets of food, pack the food in bags to be distributed to families through a drop off-line, and assist with clean up. Projects will have 8-10 volunteers at a time.

Safety: As we plan for and prepare for projects, we are keeping safety as a top priority and striving to follow CDC and WHO guidelines. We ask that if you have been sick, travelled, or been exposed to someone who has COVID-19 in the last 14 days that you do not sign up for the project. If you are in a more at-risk demographic for COVID-19 (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/high-risk-complications.html) we would ask you to consider not volunteering at this time. If you are not comfortable being in groups of 10 individuals at this time, this opportunity is not for you. Our team is taking extra precautions and will have gloves and masks that must be worn. All projects will be set up so that you are 6 ft apart from other volunteers.

Qualifications: We are looking for someone who is comfortable lifting 10-30 pounds and standing for up to 4 hours.

Ideal Candidates: Individuals passionate about volunteerism, community service, have flexible schedules, college and graduate students, individuals that are not in COVID-19 high-risk groups.

Requirements: 20-minute briefing before packing
Locations: We will be at the following 5 sites. Please register for the site and times that you prefer.

  • Phoenix Academy/ Crim High School (30317)
  • Cleveland Elementary School (30315)
  • Sylvan Middle School (30310)
  • Douglass High School (30318)
  • Bunche Middle School (30331)

Essential Service: This volunteer position is considered an essential service, all volunteers will receive a letter verifying they are supporting food insecurity.

Cancelling shifts: Your service is critical to the distribution of nutritious food to students and families across Atlanta. If you cannot make your volunteer shift PLEASE remove yourself from the opportunity immediately, as drop in number of volunteers impacts our ability to feed families. If your schedule changes last minute, PLEASE inform us if you will not be in attendance for your volunteer shift.

If you are interested in a leadership role, please email abisgaard@handsonatlanta.org.
